Objective: To investigate the expression level of the hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) and the c-Met/hepatocyte growth factor receptor mRNA in invasive cervical carcinoma and their associations with invasion and metastasis of cervical carcinoma. Methods: Expressions of the HGF mRNA and C-Met mRNA in postoperative samples of 36 cases with uterine cervix cancer and tissular samples of 31 cases with normal uterine cervix were determined using RT-PCR, and relative quantitation study was conducted. Results: The rate of positive c-Met mRNA expression in cervical carcinoma was significantly higher than that in normal uterine cervix. In primary tumors with the c-Met mRNA expression, the level in the group of lymphatic metastasis and of non-lymphatic metastasis was 1.6515±0.0850 and 1.2216±0.1191 respectively (P〈0.001); the level in the group with stage I B and stage Ⅱ was 1.2086± 0.1387 and 1.5497±0.1802 (P〈0.001), and the level in the group with the low and high grade was 1.4376±0.2387 and 1.2197±0.1419, respectively (P〈0.05). Conclusions: There is a high expression of c-Met mRNA in the group of invasive uterine cervical cancer, and the HGF/c-Met pathway may play an important role in the invasion and metastasis of cervical cancer.
