Objective To elucidate the role of P53, nm23 and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) on angiogenesis and matastasis of nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Methods Surgically resected specimens of 64 nasopharyngeal carcinomas were studied by immunohistochemical stainning for P53 protein, nm23 protein, and VEGF. Results Positive expressions of P53, nm23 protein and VEGF were found in 65.63%, 53. 12% and 68. 75 % of nasopharyngeal carcinoma specimens, respectively. There was a positive relationship between P53 and VEGF expression. The microvessel density (MVD) in p53 and VEGF positive tumors was significantly higher in patients with cervical lymph node metastases than that in patients without metastases. No correlation was identified between nm23 and MVD stainning. The MVD in nm23-negative and p53 positive tumors was significantly high. These phenomena were more easily found in patients with cervical lymph node metastases than in patients without metastases. Conclution The detection of P53, nm23 proteins may be related to the synergic expression, on angiogenesis and matastasis of nasopharyngeal carcinoma.
