The study aimed to examine the relationship between stimulus exposure duration and hemispheric asymmetries for processing Chinese characters. Three durations (60,200 and duration between stimulus onset and response respectively) were used in a half visual field Stroop paradigm, in which colored stimuli were presented to the left, right, or center visual field. The results show that a) there is a right visual field-left hemisphere advantage at a stimulus duration between stimulus onset and response; b) there are no significant differences between right and left visual fields at a stimulus duration of 200 ms; and c) there is a left visual field-right hemisphere advantage at a stimulus duration of 60 ms, in processing Chinese characters for participants with right-handedness. The findings suggest that the advantages of processing the meaning of Chinese characters (Stroop task) across the cerebral hemispheres are modified by the stimulus presentation duration. In addition, the way of responding as quickly as possible or as accurately as possible can affect the direction of a Stroop effect. When responding as quickly as possible, participants show a quick response to congruent stimuuli, and when responding as accurately as possible, participants show a quick response to conflicting stimuli.
