Objective To investigate the correlation between the level of vascular endothelial growth factors(VEGF), type and disease staging in patients with acute leukemia. Methods To detect VEGF in peripheral blood, bone marrow blood and cultured bone marrow nucleated cells supernatant from different stage of acute lymphocyte leukemia(ALL) and acute nonlymphocyte leukemia(ANLL) patients. The rate of blast cells and juvenile cells in patients'marrow were assessed simultaneously and analyzed statistically. Results VEGF in peripheral blood, bone marrow blood and cultured bone marrow nucleared cells supernatant from different stage of ALL and ANLLL patient groups were significantly higher than that from the control group, but not between ALL group and ANLL group. The VEGF decreased after remission, but it was still higher than that from the control group. The recidivist group processed a highest VEGF level in all groups. The VEGF level and rate of blast cells and juvenile cells in patient' bone marrow cells showed positive correlation. Conclusion Assessment of VEGF for diagnosis and estimation of prognosis in patients with acute leukemia is of important clinical significance.
