Martin & Rose categorize projection into four kinds, namely projecting clauses, names for ‘ speech acts' , projecting within clauses and scare quotes. This paper, in the light of Martin et al' s appraisal theory, alms to explicate the implications and evaluative functions of the last kind. It first delineates scare quotes, then analyzes and exemplifies the evaluative functions of scare quotes in journalistic dlseourse and finally explores the approaches to the identification of the functions. The study shows that the implications and evaluative functions of scare quotes in journalistic genre are very rich, which are indicative of the characteristics of the genre. The alto of employing scare quotes in journalistic genre is to make the evaluation clear or disown the evaluation so as to make news reports more objective. Scare quotes enable the author to express such attitudes as acknowledgement (approval, neutrality and disapproval) and distancing (indefiniteness and doubt), which can be inferred from the different contexts.
