Purpose; To study the expression of intrecellular cell-cell adhesion molecules- E-Cadherins (E9 and Uvomorulin) for elucidating the pathogenesis of molecular basis in Ming's classfication of gastric carcinoma according to its growth pathern. Method: ECadherins were examined immunohistochemically in 46 cases of surgical specimens of gastric carcinomas, using MAb to E-Cadherins.Results: The E-Cadherins are expressed homogeneously both in normal foveolar epithelium, and in gastric epithelium or intestinal metaplastic glandular epithellum in chronic gastritis. In the latter condition, it is usually polarized along the apical border of glands. However, it displays heterogeneous reduced expression or lost in gastric carcinoma, esPecially in infiltrative type of gastric carcinoma according to Ming's classfication (24 /24, 100 % ), and also in poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma (26/31, 84 % ). The singly scattered neoplastic cells usually lack the expression of adhesion molecules. Conclusion: The results demonstrate that the expression of E-Cadherins is different in different types of gastric carcinoma according to its growth pattern of different degree of differentiation. They may form the molecufar basis for the pathogenesis of Ming's classfication of gastric carcinoma.
