Tom Wolfe's novel A Man in Full, though extremely popular since its publication in 1998, has received more condemnations than celebrations. Combining a close reading of the text with the author's writing principle and techniques, this paper argues that A Man in Full, woven through a unique concept of "status", which is quite different from the traditional European way of thinking, is a new social novel distinct from postmodern experimental fic- tion. Attempting to shoulder the task of interpreting the American society, A Man in Full not only vividly depicts a panorama of contemporary American social life, hut also deconstructs the "colonial complex" in the mind of contemporary American elite.
