Objective To explore the expressional level of the transforming growth factor beta 1 gene products and it's clinical importance in non small cell lung cancer. Methods The expressional level of transforming growth factor beta 1 protein was detected in 73 human non small cell lung cancer samples by immunohistochemistry. Results The results showed that the expressional level of transforming growth factor beta 1 protein was closely related to stages of cancer, type of histological classification, degree of cell differentiation and presence of lymph node metastasis. The protein expression level of transforming growth factor beta 1 in adenocarcinoma in significantly higher than that in squamous cell carcinoma and adenosquamous carcinoma. The protein level in poor differentiated cancer is significantly lower than that in well and moderately differentiated cancer, in stage Ⅲ and Ⅳ than that in stage Ⅰ and Ⅱ, in metastasis cancer than that in primary cancer, and in the primary cancer with lymph node metastasis than that in primary tumor without lymph node metastasis ( P <0.01 or P <0.05). Conclusion The results suggest that transforming growth factor beta 1 gene may involve the histogenesis, development and metastasis of lung cancer.
