Notch signaling exists extensively in both invertebrate and vertebrate, and it is a highly conservative signal pathway in the evolutionary process of animal. Its signal pathway could realize signal transduction in the cytoplasm and transcription in the nuclear through interactions of adjacent cells, and thus regulate the differentiation of several lineages of cells and tissues precisely. It plays an important role in regulating the growth and development of organisms. Retinal ganglion cells derive from retinal progenitor cells. The differentiation of retinal progenitor cells into retinal ganglion cells is determined by both progenitor cells' intrinctic signaling and retinal microenvironment extrinctic signaling. Among these signaling, Notch signaling plays a key role in regulating the development of retinal ganglion cells. The review summarized the research progress in the composition and activation of Notch signaling pathway and its effect on the development of retinal ganglion ceils.
