摘　　要：威廉.福克纳在《八月之光》中塑造了克里斯默斯这样一个具有文化与文学功能的小说人物。克里斯默斯的文化功能主要是体现于这一人物本身在作家构建作品中特有的包括历史、宗教、种族歧视以及通过描述克里斯默斯的性行为来揭示的人性等方面的文化氛围,而其文学功能则主要是体现在克里斯默斯在小说情节发展的过程中所起的作用。因此,克里斯默斯象征着福克纳小说创作的高超的艺术水平。In Light in August, William Faulkner has characterized Joe Christmas as one who has cultural and literary functions. The cultural function of this character can be discerned in the author＇ s establishment of the unique cultural atmosphere which includes the aspects of history, religion, racial discrimination and human nature as revealed in the sexuality of Joe Christmas whereas the literary function of this character lies in his manipulation of the development of the plot. Joe Christmas, thereby, represents Faulkner＇ s excellent artistry in novel writing.
