Bai Juyi's poems and essays were introduced to Japan when the poet was still alive in the mid 9th century. Theses poems and essays were popular in the following 400 years and admired greatly by Japanese scholars. However, the reception of Bai Juyi's literature was not the same in different periods. This article will discuss Bai Juyi's image as a hermit in Japanese history with a focus on his One Hundred Poems and Essays published in Japan's Kamakura period. The text analysis will explore the process of the rejection and acceptance by Japanese scholars in their learning of the Chinese culture.
