A Bend in the River is the representative work of Naipaul, who got the Nobel Prize in 2001.In the novel,an African named Salim,in order to realize his self-value went to an African country which had achieved independence not long ago. According to his physical and spiritual experience, the marginal life of former colonial people and the loss of native culture have been revealed clearly. The colonial people had become wandering spirits, rootless men and the others who demonstrated the superiority of western culture.
