Objective To investigate effect of seasickness on absorption in iron in rats. Methods Twenty male Sprague - Dawley rats were randomly divided into control group and seasickness group. The rats in seasickness group were given simulation seasick stimulus two hours a day and did so for 14 successive days. Behavior of pica kaolin in rats was regarded as index of motion sickness. The rats in control group were not given simulation seasick stimulus. Appetite and absorbed dose of kaolin in rats were recorded daily. And stools of rats in the two groups were collected on day 1, day 3, day 7, day 14. The iron content of absorption and egestion were measured by atomic absorption spectrophotometer. Then the apparent absorption rate of rats would be calculated. Results The rats in seasickness group had significantly better appetites for kaolin than those in control group ( P 〈 0.05 ). There was no significant difference between intake quantity of the two groups. The iron content in feces on day 7 in seasickness group was significantly higher than that in control group ( P 〈 0. 05) ,while the apparent absorption rate on day 7 in seasickness group was significantly lower than that in control group(P 〈0.05). Conclusions Seasick stimulation in a certain period can interfered with absorption in iron.
