OBJECTIVE: To study the expressions of Sonic Hedgehog (Shh) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in gastric carcinoma and their clinical significance. METHODS:The expression of Shh and VEGF in 45 cases of gastric carcinoma tissues and 15 cases of non-cancerous stomach tissues were detected by immunohistochemistry. RESULTS: The positive rates of Shh (66.7%) and VEGF (71. 1%) in gastric cancer were significantly higher than that in non-cancerous stomach tissues (P〈0.01). The expression of Shh was higher in middle-and-poorly differentiation gastric carcinoma than that in well differentiation gastric carcinoma. The overexpression of Shh in gastric cancer was related to the differentiation of gastric cancer (P〈0.01) ,and that of VEGF was related to lymph node metastasis and the differentiation of gastric cancer(P〈0.05). The positive correlation was found between the expressions of Shh and VEGF(0.01〈P〈0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Shh plays an important role in the pathogenesis of gastric cancer. The combined detection of Sonic Hedgehog and VEGF may be of important clinical value for early diagnosis, evaluating the infiltrative ability and prognosis of gastric carcinoma.
