论白璧德“人文主义”思想的三个核心概念——“内在制约”、“二元论”与“存在的三个等级”

摘　　要：白璧德的"人文主义"思想与"新人文主义"这一提法二者并不完全对应。后者系指上世纪20世纪20年代美国文学批评界的一种运动,而前者则系此运动赖以开展的思想基础。白璧德一生著述宏富,但各书中的核心概念——"内在制约"、"二元论"与"存在的三个等级"——则一以贯之,构成了"人文主义"思想的基本内容。这三个核心概念彼此联系,互相指涉:"内在制约"概念不可避免地导致了"二元论"概念的产生,而"存在的三个等级"则与"二元论"概念密切相关,厘清这三个核心概念成为进一步讨论相关问题的基础。Irving Babbitt＇s Humanism and Neo-humanism refer to each other but do not always overlap. The latter is more often viewed as a movement of literary criticism in 1920＇s America than a solid school of thought, while the former is considered as the philosophy based on which this movement evolved. Babbitt as a prolific writer produced voluminous works, and these three kernel ideas- ＂inner check＂, ＂dualism＂ and ＂three levels of being＂-constitute the basics of Babbitt＇s Humanism and serve as a strong thread going through all his books. These three notions are closely interrelated to each other： the notion of ＂inner check＂ leads inevitably to that of ＂dualism＂, and in ＂dualism＂ the third notion ＂three levels of being＂ is strongly suggested. Hopefully, after a clarification of these three notions a launching pad might be constructed for further relevant discussions.
