AIM: To monitor the time of fibrovascularization of hydroxyapatite (HA) orbital implants in human eyes by means of enhanced MRI dynamic imaging technology, and to confirm the clinical application value of MRI in assessment of fibrovascularization of HA orbital implants through studying related MRI information and data. METHODS: A total of 15 cases (15 eyes) who underwent enucleation and first stage HA orbital implants were enrolled in the study. Since the first month after the implantation, the related enhanced MRI examinations were performed by radiologist once a month for consecutive 7 times, and the values of VE/VHA were calculated. RESULTS: The values of VE/VHA in magnetic resonance imaging were significantly increased during the previous six months ( P 〈 0. 01 ) after HA orbital implants were accomplished in human eyes. However, the value of VE/ VHA in the seventh month was almost identical to that of the sixth month. CONCLUSION: MRI could be imaging evidence for monitoring the fibrovascularzation of HA orbital implants. HA orbital implants with the diameter of 20mm in normal human eyes could have complete fibrovascularization after six months.
