Objective To investigate the effects of transection of cervical sympathetic trunk (TCST) on focal cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury in rat by simulating stellate ganglion block. Methods Rats were randomly assigned to experimental group, control group, or sham-operation group. The rat model of focal cerebral ischemia/reperfusion was established by middle cerebral artery occlusion via an intravascular thread insertion, with 2-hour ischemia followed by 24 hours of reperfusion. Observed the effects of TCST on neurological deficit scores, cerebral infarct size, superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, malondialdehyde (MDA) content, and nitric oxide (NO) level in the ischemic tissue of the brain in rats were observed. Results As compared with those in the control group, in the experimental group, neurological deficit scores and cerebral infarct size were significantly reduced, as were MDA content and NO level; while SOD activity was increased (P 〈 0.05 for all comparisons). Conclusion TCST has a neuroproteetive effect on focal cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury, which may be associated with its action to increase SOD activity and decrease both MDA content and NO level.
