摘 要:赫尔曼·麦尔维尔的《雷德伯恩》因其明显的自传成分而经常为学界所诟病。长期以来,该小说的文本内涵并没有得以充分开掘。通过对小说的深入阅读,笔者认为麦尔维尔并非只是描摹自己的个人经历,而是通过虚实的有机结合,用第一人称叙事手法将主人公雷德伯恩的个人经历、心理感受和各种阅读素材交互拼贴,构建了一个由多种话语组合成的混合体。在这个众声喧哗的文本世界里,文类与意识形态、事实与虚构交互作用产生了有意味的含混和象征意义。本文着重考察这部小说中人物塑造所引发的文本内涵。Redburn marks a different type of authorship engaged with worldly circumstances, but its biographical nature has incurred censure from critics. A careful reading of the novel, however, reveals that Redburn contains passages of linked analogies that are structured between Herman Melville's own experience and the fictional projected by the first personal narrator named Redburn. By incorporating episodes of his own experience and literary allusions, Melville successfully brings together Redburn' s bookish references and his critique of the British capitalist society embodied in both London and Liverpool though in many dubious ways, In its numerous details of life aboard a merchant vessel, the novel manifests Melville' s desire to distinguish himself as a great writer of the sea. The present paper, therefore, attempts to explore how Melville fulfills this purpose in the fiction by means of careful characterization.
