摘　　要：文章通过对《德伯家的苔丝》作品意象的探讨,分析主人公苔丝性格,从自然及美学两方面探讨"纯洁"女人可能包含的其他意义。通过分析作品特定语境中人物刻画特征,论证"纯洁"一词所具有的包括"纯洁"、"纯粹"在内的多层次的意义。In the study of the famous novel by Thomas Hardy ＂Tess of the D＇urbervilles＂,this paper takes up the clues provided by Thomas Hardy in Preface to the Fifth （English） Edition,to probe into the implicit multiple meanings carried by the word＂pure＇in the subtitle ＂a pure woman＂. In its discussion of the two senses of that make up the phrase-its meanings both in nature and in aesthetics, the paper focuses on seeking the interrelated relation between imagebuilding and characterization ,making attempts to construct the pattern governing the devising of the scheme and the overall narrative strategies.
