摘　　要：本文通过对时态之情态用法的界定，通过对时态、时间和情态三者之间关系的讨论，通过对此用法是否具备语法隐喻三个区别性特征的考察，推论出时态的情态用法的基本属性。研究得出：时态的情态用法属于人际功能隐喻的范畴，是情态隐喻的一种体现形式，同时当它与特定句式结合在一起又是语气隐喻的一种体现形式。This paper is intended to examine the nature of medal uses of English tense. It first defines modal uses of tense, then discusses the relations among tense, time and modality, and finally focuses on whether modal uses of tense are characterized by the three defining features of grammatical metaphor. It is concluded that modal uses of tense fall into the category of the interpersonal metafunction metaphor,and that they are a realization of modality metaphor, and that when used in certain clause patterns, they are a realization of mood metaphor.
