摘　　要：《红字》是对悲剧人性的深刻挖掘,男主人公丁梅斯代尔和齐灵窝斯的悲剧人性,前者在于其宗教信仰与人性之间的矛盾以及公开的自我与隐蔽的自我的冲突;而后者在于其对人性的践踏和蔑视所产生的变态欲望与自我毁灭的冲突。This paper argues that The Scarlet Letter is a deep probe into the tragedy of the human nature and points out that Dimmesdale＇s tragedy of the human nature lies in two conflicts： the conflict between his religious belief and his human nature and the one between his public self and private self , while Chillingworth＇ s tragedy lies in the conflict between his violation of the human nature and his self-destruction.
