[Objective] To investigate the association between human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and esophageal squamous cell cancer (ESCC). [Methods] HPV-16, 18 DNA was examined in 112 ESCC specimens, 38 dysplasia tissues and 74 normal esophageal mucosa tissues, respectively by using fluorescence quantitative PCR. [Results] The detection frequencies of HPV-16 DNA in 112 ESCC, 38 dysplasia tissues and 74 normal mucosa tissues were 38.4% (43/112), 15.9% (6/38) and 5.4% (4/74), respectively. The detection frequency of HPV-16 was significantly higher in ESCC than in dysplasia tissues and normal ones. The detection frequency of HPV-16 was also higher in dysplasia tissues than in normal mucosa, while no statistical significance was found. No significant associ- ation was observed between the detection frequency of HPV-16 and the differentiation of ESCC. HPV-18 DNA was not detected in any of tissue specimens. [Conclusions] HPV-16 infection may be a high-risk factor for ESCC in Chongqing local area, and therefore the prevention and therapy of HPV infection would be of value for the reduction of incidence of ESCC in this aera.
