Sexist language refers to "words, phrases, and expressions that unnecessarily differentiate between women and men or exclude, trivialize, or diminish either gender (Parks & Roberton, 1998, p.455) . Although there is sexist language towards women and that towards men, women are actually more often than men the victims of this kind of language. So the present paper mainly focuses on sexist language towards women. It first analyzes why sexist language exists. Then it makes a comparison between sexist language in Chinese and English. Here, typical features in both languages, which show the stereotype of women, are mentioned. Following this, examples are provided to show the similarities manifested in word order, occupational terms, addressing terms, proverbs and pop songs. Finally it gives suggestions to the ways to eliminate sexist language.
