摘　　要：This paper explores how culture can be treated as an explanatory variable in study of politeness. The paper points out short-comings of the now-available theories and methods concerning politeness and conceive Edward T. Hall＇s concept of low-context and high-context cultures as a new perspective towards politeness. The study is helpful for people to think culturally and behave politely in intercultural communications.
