The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of regular Changquan and Taichiquan exercise on cardiorespiratory function of male college students. Twenty-four healthy male freshmen were randomly divided into Changquan exercises group and Taichiquan exercises group. Third ferrule primary Changquan and 24 forms Taichiquan were selected to be the training sports respectively for two groups. Exercise training was performed 3-4 days per week and 1 hour per time for 12 weeks. Maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) was tested before and after the training program respectively by ergometer. The result shows that the VO2 max of Changquan group and Taichiquan group were 39.93 ml/kg/min and 39.71 ml/kg/min respectively before training. After 12 weeks exercises, the VO2 max of both groups were improved significantly, which were 42. 76ml/kg/min and 43. 20ml/kg/min respectively. The VO2 max of Taichiquan group improved higher than Changquan group. It concludes that as good sport to improve physical fitness, both Changquan and Taichiquan can improve cardiorespiratory function. Comparing with Changquan exercises, Taichiquan exercise can produce more effective effects on it.
