摘　　要：在这部作品中,威尔斯充分发挥了他的想象力,通过怪诞的故事,反映并预见了当代社会的种种危机和异化,特别是资本主义社会中由于科技的发展所带来的种种危机和异化。本文把马尔库塞等西方批判理论家对技术理性进行批判的社会理论用于对这部小说的主题进行分析,从人性的丧失、人类的分裂、身体的衰退、精神的颓废四个方面展示了科学的不当运用,即技术理性给人类造成的负面影响,以此深化我们对这部关于人类文明发展前景的文学作品的前瞻性主题意义的解读。In this science fiction, Wells exerts his imagination to a full and through the fantastic story reflects and foresees the crises and alienation of contemporary society, especially those brought about by the development of science and technology in capitalist society. The common concern and critical spirit between Wells＇s science fiction and the Frankfurt School theorists＇ critical theory lead me to analyze the theme of this science fiction in the light of critical theorists Marcuse and others＇ critique of technocracy. The novel shows the negative effects of the improper use of science （technocracy） on human beings from the following four aspects ： loss of human nature, split of human race, physical decline, and mental decadence. The analysis aims to deepen our understanding of the foresighted theme of the work concerning the prospect of human civilization.
