摘　　要：如何才能界定中国人的素质?有哪些优劣呢?美国早期传教士明恩溥以透视手法所观察到的中国人的影像,为我们勾勒出比较清晰的图谱。它影响了美国中国学的研究和中国思想史的发展,为国人的自我认识和反省提供了良好的开端。How to define the Chinese characters？ What are the merits and shortcomings of the Chinese characters？ The early American commissioner Arthur Henderdon Smith observed in perspective and sketched a relatively clear picture of Chinese characters, which influenced the development of Chinese Studies in America and the history of Chinese thinking, and formed the beginning of the self-rethinking and self-conscientiousness for the Chinese people.
