摘　　要：研究美华裔作家任碧莲在《典型美国人》中如何表述中国传统儒家文化与美国个人主义文化的关系;指出她从英汉的结构和习语差异入手,以"lis-ten"和"听"作为标志性的主词来表达中国传统文化和美国主流文化里的两种不同限度观;认为她这种文学表述方式赋予了小说叙事以巧妙的形式统一,并将中美文化中的两种不同限度观生动而直观地呈现给读者,最后达到解析和针砭美国商业文化中的极端个人主义思想的目的。In Typical American, Gish Jen implies that one of the basic differences between American mainstream culture and Chinese Confucian culture lies in their views on human capacity and freedom. By using Listen and ＂Ting＂ as the emblems of two different views on human limitations, she attempts to round up the major facts about Ralph＇s changing consideration of his own limitations, and bring unity into her narration in order to examine better and provide an antidote to the American rugged individualism.
