The phenomenon that a so-called 'duanqiao(broken-bridge)isn't actually broken is not limited to the'duanqiao' over the West Lake in Hangzhou. It widely existed in the poetry works since Tang Dynasty. The original 'duanqiao' referred to a kind of simple beam bridge that fishermen set up for the convenience of using the bamboo fish-and-crab trap to catch fishes and crabs. And pedestrians can also use it for crossing.Sometimes it can be spelled as bamboo-fish-and-crab-trap bridge. The symbol of 'duanqiao'in the literary works has gradually been endowed with the meanings of parting, hermit, love, and so on.
