In order to understand the dynamic changes of phytoplankton structure at the micro-layer, annual survey was carried out from May 2007 to Apr. 2008 in Dapengao Area of Daya Bay, South China Sea. A total of 142 species of phytoplankton were identified. Diatoms and dinoflageUates were the dominant phytoplankton groups, meanwhile large numbers of cyanobacteria and filamentous larvae of macroalgae such as red algae, brown algae occurred as well. The phytoplankton abundance is varied from 1.90 × 10^4 to 8.17 × 10^5/L, with an annual mean of 2.45 × 10^5/L. The phytoplankton community was co-dominated by diatoms and cyanobacteria, which contributed 48.41% and 42.14% of the total phytoplankton, respectively. Diatoms were preponderant in summer and autumn, while the cyanobactefia mostly dominated in winter. The values of Shannon-Weaver species diversity index ( H' ) and Pielou evenness (J) were high and showed no seasonal variations, with the averages of 3.02 and 0.62, respectively. From the results, it could be suggested that the high abundance and proportion of cyanobacteria were an important feature of the phytoplankton in micro-layer in Daya Bay, it showed the ongoing deterioration of water quality in the area.
