The Genre-Based Teaching Approach Is Indispensible——Investigation of the Introduction Genre in English Majors' MA Theses in China

摘  要:依据Swales提出的CARS语篇分析模式,即“三语步”的学术论文引言部分的体裁结构(确立研究领域、确立研究地位、占据研究地位),我们对我国北方六所大学英语专业硕士学位论文引言部分的写作情况进行了调查分析。结果发现,随机抽样的80篇英语专业硕士学位论文引言样本中合乎该三语步认知结构的概率偏低;各研究方向(文学、语言学、翻译)硕士学位论文引言部分的必要步骤(回顾前期研究成果;指出研究差距、提出问题、或继承前期研究传统;概述研究目的、介绍科研论文结构)的相对频率存在显著性差异。统计结果表明:有些学生对学术论文体裁的结构、社会功能和认知模式不甚了了,难以有效实现学术论文的交际目的;建议将体裁分析教学法切实应用于高级英语写作教学及学术科研写作实践,以规范硕士研究生的英语学术论文写作。Based on Swales' CARS genre-analysis model, i.e. the 'three-Move' genre structure (establishing a territory, establishing a niche, occupying a niche) for the introduction genre of academic papers, this paper aims to investigate and analyze the status quo of the Introduction in English majors MA theses in six universities or colleges in north China. The study shows that in the 80 random samples covering such fields as linguistics, literature and translation, the probability value (P=0.425) of the qualified samples is a bit low and there is significant differences in the relative frequency of the obligatory steps of writing the Introduction genre (Revi-wing items of previous research; Indicating a gap, Question-raising; Continuing a tradition; Outlining purposes, Indicating RA structure). The statistical results show some students' insufficient consciousness of the genre structure, social functions and cognitive schema of academic papers, hence their difficulty in achieving the communicative purpose of their academic writing; it is suggested that the Genre-based teaching approach be applied to the advanced writing course as well as academic writing, so as to bring the graduates academic writing in line with the standard.
