Stevens’ nature poems are frequented by leaves that provide a space for the poet to 'perform' his green thought. Under his pen, leaves are no longer passive objects to express man’s feelings and thoughts. Instead, they are themselves live subjects that possess thought and soul, independent of man’s subjective will and consciousness, and have irresistible power, whose life and death determine man’s laughter and tears. In comparison with those never-fading boughs in the Garden of Eden, Stevens prefers earthy boughs that come and go in due time in that the former stands for man’s vain desire for eternity whereas the latter manifests the cyclical changes and processes of the perennial world of nature.
