Objective To investigate the expression of Survivin and vascular endothelial growth factor C (VEGF-C) in gastric carcinoma and its clinical significance. Methods Immunohistochemical technique was used to determine the expression of Survivin and VEGF C protein in 62 patients with gastric carcinoma and 20 specimens of normal gastric tissue. The relationship between the gene expression and histology type, TNM stage, depth of infiltration, and lymph node metastasis was analyzed. Results The positive expression of Survivin and VEGF C in gastric carcinoma was 69.4% (43/62) and 75.8% (47/62), respective ly. In normal gastric tissue, the expression of Survivin and VEGF-C was 10.0%(2/20) and 20.0%(4/20). The difference between the two groups was significant (χ2=21.50, 20.02;P〈0.05). In the cancer tissue, the expression of Survivin and VEGF C was closely related to TNM stage, depth of invasion, cell differentiation and lymph node metastasis (χ2=4.30-11.13 ,P〈0.05). Conclusion Both survivin and VEGF C involve in occurrence and development of gastric carcinoma, a detection of the expression may be used as an objective index for predicting the prognosis of this disease.
