摘　　要：海明威作品中充斥着"硬汉"形象,但他同时也是一位关注女性和女性意识的作家。本文对其短篇小说《雨中的猫》里"猫"这一符号进行解读,认为海明威笔下的"猫"是男权社会里女性的象征:它既是没有归属的漂泊者,又是渴望理解的社会零余人和无奈的被动接受者,其指代的女性生存状态就是非中心与边缘化。从符号学视角来看,海明威写作风格的"冰山原则"在于以有限的符号形式创造无限的意义空间。＂Tough guys＂ abound in Hemingway＇s works, but the writer is also concerned with ＂female issues. ＂ In his short story ＂Cat in the Rain,＂ the image of cat symbolizes women＇s existential situation in the patriarchal society. Marginalized, they are rootless drifters, passive receivers, and social outcasts longing for understanding. Observed from the perspective of semiotics, Hemingway＇s ＂ iceberg＂ theory is to create infinite meanings with definite linguistic signs.
