The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of dental heat-pressing on the microstructure and chemical stability of a novel lithium disilicate glass-ceramic. The parent glass derived from SiO2-Li2O-K2O- Al2O3-ZrO2-P2O5 system was melted and heat-treated. Then half glass-ceramic specimens were subjected to dental heat-pressing. The crystalline phase composition and microstructures were analyzed by X-ray diffractometry (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy(SEM). Chemical stability of glass-ceramic specimens was measured following the instruction of ISO 6872. Results demonstrated that lithium disilicate (Li2Si2O5) represented the main crystalline phase for both heat-pressed and Controlled specimens. Increased relative intensities of major peaks and prolonger crystalline size were observed after heat pressing, which was attributed to the rearrangement of the monoclinic lithium disilicate crystals. Heat-pressed glass-ceramic showed stronger resistance to chemical corrosion. Dental heat-pressing could result in the change in microstructure and improve the chemical stability of experimental glass-ceramic.
