Objective To evaluate the expressions and significances of matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) and proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) in bladder transitional cell carcinoma (BTCC). Method The expressions of MMP-9 and PCNA in 58 cases of BTCC and 10 cases of normal bladder tissues were detected by SP immunohistochemical technique. Results The expression rates of MMP-9 and PCNA were higher in BTCC than those in normal bladder tissues (65.5% and 69.0% vs 0 and 10.0%,P 〈 0.01 ), and were higher in high grade BTCC than those in low grade BTCC (78.0% and 85.4% vs 35.3% and 29.4%,P〈 0.01), and were higher in invasive BTCC than those in superficial BTCC (83.3% and 86.1% vs 36.4% and 40.9%, P 〈 0.01 ). There were positive correlation between the expressions of MMP-9 and PCNA in BTCC (r = 0.451, P 〈 0.01 ). Conclusion MMP-9 and PCNA may play an important role in the development of BTCC, and combined detection of them may be benefit to evaluating the malignancv and vredicting the proanosis of BTCC.
