Objective To understand gender differences of psycho-physiological responses to heroin related cues in abstinent heroin dependent patients. Methods In the self-controlled study, 173 male and 235 female abstinent heroin addicts were exposed to videotapes of heroin using and simulacrum after the self relaxation. The psycho-physiological reactions were measured by Multi-Biofeedback instrument before, during and after cue exposures. Results Using covariance analysis of repeated measures, we found that gender had different impact on the change trends in skin temperature (ST) between "during" and "after" cue exposures ( P 〈 0. 05 ). Female heroin dependent patients had lower respiration rate (RT) than male in the "during" stage, and had lower ST in "after" stage(P 〈 0. 01 ). Conclusions Gender was responsible for the differences in RT and ST when heroin-related cues exposed, and the impact of gender on Skin Temperature (ST) change along with time.
