Following the sequencing of the human and other genomes, much research effort is now invested in post, genomic science. Metabonomics, defined as the systematic study of small-molecular-weight substances in cells, tissues and/or whole organisms as influenced by multiple factors, including genetic alterations, pathophysicological stimuli, pharmaceutical interventions, diet, lifestyle or environmental influences, is a novel methodology arising from the post-genomics era for the study of molecular systems biology. These substances may directly or indirectly interact with molecular targets and thereby influence the risk and complications associated with various diseases, including liver diseases. Consequently, the comprehensive and quantitative study of the changed, endogenous metabolites, or metabolomies, will be helpful in the discovery of the liver diseases' phynotype. In this article, metabonomic concept and research techniques and its application in liver disease researches are reviewed.
