The Sea, by the contemporary Irish novelist John Banville, is a novel of nostalgia, laden with an atmosphere of melancholy, loss and a sense of disorientation. By adopting smell as a distinctive trait of its protagonist, the novel ingeniously links the past with the present, the memory with the immediacy both on narrative and metaphorical planes. The insistent description of smell, therefore, becomes a tie of the protagonist's emotional pilgrimage, represents a modern man who is caught between seeking to reconstruct his unified self and finding the impossibility to obtain one, and meanwhile reflects the novelist's "mediational" position between a modernist and a postmodernist writer.
