摘 要:This paper deals with the Standard American Proficiency Program (S.E.R) in Oakland School District acknowledges African American Vernacular English (AAVE) as a legitimate language in classroom and set up AAVE as a bridge to teach Standard English. Its pedagogical value to standard American English can be understood in the following three senses: First AAVE can be a connection between new information and already known information; Second AAVE is a mediate device between languistic "receptive ability" and "generative ability"; Third teachers can help black students recognize language diversity through comparing, translating, and provide linguistic knowledge of AAVE and standard English and help them improve the academic ability.
