This article investigates the differences between means of expressing number in Chinese and Korean from various aspects such as syntactic position, truth value semantics, and inherent functions of the plural markers. The use of the Chinese plural marker is influenced by syntactic positions and truth conditions, while that of the Korean plural marker is decided by truth conditions alone. Nouns denoting kinds vary in terms of the degree of the [+/-collective] feature. This article makes a preliminary classification of kind denoting nouns, and pays attention to how the two languages differ from each other in this classification. Both Chinese and Korean plural markers denote sets of individuals; Korean plural marker also functions to make the individual members of sets prominent. These differences between the two languages are attributed to their respective typological characteristics and distinctions between functions of plural markers.
