摘　　要：托马斯·哈代是一个典型的宿命论者。其小说中的命运观念明显,悲观主义也显而易见。从社会、教育、文化背景3个方面,以《德伯家的苔丝》为例阐述哈代的命运主题及悲剧意识。Tomas Hardy is a typical fatalist. It is easier to interpret his thoughts of destiny and his pessimism from his works. The paper analyzed Hardy＇s theme of destiny and tragedy in Tess of the d＇ Urbervilles from three aspects, i.e. social background, educational background, and cultural background.
