摘　　要：戈尔丁的《教堂尖塔》是一部具有生态意识的寓言作品。现实世界的索尔兹伯里教堂尖塔是建筑学的奇观,巍然屹立在并不坚实的沼泽地上;小说虚构世界中的尖塔则像"向上喷的瀑布",是教长乔斯林盲目的利己主义的象征,最终因为没有牢固的地基而倒塌。尖塔的建造是人类以上帝的名义掩盖自己的私欲、永无休止地征服自然的象征,尖塔的倒塌则象征着自然给予人类的惩罚。自然是沉默的,但它并不会永远臣服。人类对自然过度的征服最终会招致自然的愤怒,愤怒的自然会给予人类严厉的惩罚。William Golding＇s The Spire, as an allegory, is ecologically con- cerned. In its real existence, the Salisbury Cathedral spire, standing out boldly above flat marshland, is an architectural wonder. In Golding＇s novel, however, it is presented as ＂an upward waterfall＂. It is the symbol of Dean Jocetin＇s blind egotism which finally col- lapses for lack of a solid base. The construction of the spire symbolizes man＇s endlessly selfish conquest of nature in the name of God. Nature is silent, but it is not always sub- missive. The excessive conquest will result in the wrath of nature and the wrathful nature may mete out severe penalties for human beings.
