Objective To investigate the expressions of COX-2 and cell cycle regulatory proteins (Ki-67, cyclin A and p27) and the correlation between COX-2 and cell cycle-regulatory proteins in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma(ESCC). Methods The expressions of COX-2 ,Ki-67, cyclin A and p27 were examined by immunohistochemistry in 102 surgically obtained ESCC specimens (group ESCC) and in 28 specimens of tumor-adjacent normal squamous epithelium as the controls (group C). Results The expressions of COX-2, Ki-67 and cyclin A were higher, but the p27 expression was lower in group ESCC than those in group C (P〈 0. 01 ). In group ESCC, COX-2 expression was lower in staging T1-T2 than that in T3-T4 (P〈0.05). The expressions of Ki-67, cyclin A and p27 were correlated to tumor differentiation (P〈0. 01). The COX-2 expression was positively correlated to Ki-67, cyclin A and negatively correlated to p27 expression in ESCC. Conclusion COX-2 expression can reflect the invasion of ESCC cells. The high expression of COX-2, Ki-67, cyclin A and lower expression of p27 have a similar biological significance.
