Although the distinction between literal meaning and non-literal meaning has caught the hardcore of metaphor research problem. It has also brought some limitations for a breakthrough on the nature and its working mechanism of metaphor research. However under the poststructuralist perspective, the distinction is not crucial, as there is no such a thing as purely literal or non-literal meaning. What is at work in metaphor is an interplay of the two meanings (like "traces" in writing) in a discourse, which can be meaningful only in the context of movements of discourses.
