The boosting effects of xylanase treatment intensified by caustic extraction on chlorine dioxide bleaching of wheat straw pulp were investigated. Results show that the improvement of chlorine dioxide delignification with xylanase treatment is not significant. The effectiveness of chlorine dioxide delignification is not increased distinctly whether by xylanase pretreatment prior-delignification (XD) or by xylanase treatment post-delignificatiion (DX). When XDP and DXP bleaching sequences are used, the boosting effect of xylanase is not significant. By applying XDP and DXP, the brightness is increased only as much as 1.5 points, while the consumption of hydrogen peroxide can be reduced by 25%~33.3%. With peroxide-intensified extraction (EP) and using XDEPP and DXEPP bleaching sequences, the boosting effectiveness of xylanase is increased significantly, with the final brightness raised by 4.5 points. With the same sequences, xylanase treated pulp can save the dosage of chlorine dioxide up to 17%~20%. The analysis of UV-VIS absorption spectroscopy of the chromophoric compounds in the filtrate, released by enzyme treatment, showed the presence of lignin or lignin-derived compounds in the released coloring matter.
