To study the extent of ischemic injury caused by interrupted ,repeated arterial occlusion versus uninterrupeted occlusion using gerbil forebrain ischemic model. 24 Mongolian male gerbils were delivered to sham-operated control group, uninterrupted occlusion group (10 minutes temporary bilateral CCA occlusion) , interrupted occlusion groups (one separate 5-minute period of occlusion, with 10 minutes of reperfusion between occlusions, respectively). The animals were sacrificed 24 hours later after the initial arterial occulusion. Immunohistochemical evaluation for ischemic neuronal damages was conducted. The computer image analysis system was used to measure the areas of ischemic neuronal damage. Loss of immunohistochemical evaluation for microtube associated protein 2(MAP2) in the dendrites of neurons became apparent in the subiculum-CA1 region and in the layer III / IV of the cerebral cortex in the experimental groups. The animals in the group with interrupted, repeated occlusion showed a 2. 04% decrease in the areas of ischemic neuronal damages compared with the uninterrupted occlusion group. The benefit of interrupted arterial occlusion against neuronal is- chemic damage did not quite reach statistical significance (P> 0. 05). The results suggest that intermittent reperfusion may have differential effects mainly depending on the residual
