Whether lanthanide ions could induce metallothionein(MT) synthesis in marine organisms might limit the use of MT as a biomarker of heavy metal pollution in seawater.Using Ruditapes philippinarum as an experimental animal, the influences of exposure concentration and duration were studied in relation to MT content in the gills and viscera after lanthanum(Ⅲ) ion(La3+)-exposed.The results indicated that La3+ exposure could induce MT synthesis, and the MT content reached the highest level after exposed to La3+(1×102 μg·L-1) for 5 d(gills,0.135±0.014 μmol-SH/g;viscera,0.276±0.025 μmol-SH/g).For gills, the MT production was accelerated by La3+ of 1×10-1~1×102 μg·L-1 obviously, but decreased when exposed to higher concentration of La3+.For viscera, all La3+ treatments from 1×10-1 μg·L-1 to 1×104 μg·L-1 had significant induction of MT which contents were almost constant. This suggested that there was certain limit in inducing MT synthesis when exposed to La3+.It was noticeable that the concentration of rare earth elements(REEs) in some coastal water of China had reached the level to induce MT synthesis in bivalves.
