摘　　要：萨拉是英国小说家福尔斯《法国中尉的女人》里的女主人公。在这部小说中,莎拉是一个与维多利亚时代传统精神相悖,追求独立、自由的女性形象。她蔑视权威,视传统道德为粪土,颠覆男权为中心的社会秩序,否定维多利亚时代女性的行为准则。自由始终是萨拉的生命主题。为了自由,她背负骂名,放弃爱情和婚姻。在追求自由的道路上,萨拉大致经历了三个阶段:觉醒——反叛——自立。Sarah is a heroine in the ＂The French Lieutenant＇s Woman＂ by John Fowles. She rebels against Victorian conventions to pursue independence and freedom. She distains traditional morality and subverts against the male--centered social order rejecting the Victorian code of conduct for women. Freedom has always been the goal of Sarah＇s life. For freedom, she suffers vilification and gives up love and marriage. On the way to freedom, Sarah undergoes three stages-awakening, rebellion, and self--reliance. This paper aims at the employment of Transcendentalism to expound the three stages and further to unlock Sarah＇s mystery.
