The energy contribution of different dietary fat sources in broiler diets at varying inclusion rates was determined. The effective energy values(EEV)determined by this experimental method differ from the traditional metabolizable energy values as they are the actual growth response energy values calculated from the growth response to dietary fat addition.During weeks 1 to 3,soybean oil, yellow grease or beef tallow were added to the low energy basal diet at an inclusion rates of 1% or 2% of the basal diet and during weeks 4 to 6, the fats were added at inclusion rates of 1.5% and 3%.Broiler performance on the diets with added fat were compared with the performance on the basal diet plus 0,5%,10% and 15% glucose. The level of glucose addition required to produce a similar growth response as each level of fat inclusion was calculated. The effective energy value(EEV) of each fat level at each inclusion level was then determined based upon a standard ME value of 3.64 kcal/g(dry matter basis)for glucose. The results showed that the EEV of yellow grease and beef tallow at the lower supplementation levels(1%&1.5%)were greater than their respective gross energy contents. The EEV of yellow grease and beef tallow decreased with increasing levels of supplementation, with the more highly saturated fat(beef tallow)showing a more rapid decrease in EEV as inclusion rate increased. No decrease in EEV with increasing inclusion rate was observed for soybean oil over a narrow range of inclusion rates(1% to 3%)
